Slate Roof Company in New York City

Skyward Roofing has been working on residential and commercial roofs in NYC for more than 35 years. We are a locally-owned and operated roofing company that is fully licensed and certified to work on many kinds of roofs in the boroughs. Working on slate roofs requires special care and training, and they are one of our specialties. We frequently work on slate roofs for homes and businesses in NYC, and can work on any size slate roofing project you may have - from a small repair, to a completely new roof.

Advantages of Slate Roofs

Slate tiles have been used in roofing applications for over 100 years. They can be very decorative and ornate, and they always impart a classic look to the building. Slate tiles are fire-resistant, and durable, often lasting over 75 years, if not upward of 150 and more. While slate tiles are expensive, heavy, and can be difficult to work on, their aesthetic and longevity can make up for these initial costs. Slate tiles are often gray, but can come in several color varieties. Skyward Roofing proudly takes care of slate roofs in New York - replacing tiles, maintaining flashing and sealing around roof penetrations, and performing slate roof replacements, like the one featured in the videos below.

Existing slate roof has broken and uneven tiles, and some of the underlayment is visible, leaving room for leaks.
Newly-installed slate roof is neat and tidy, and completely covers the roof deck. This roof will last for decades.

Slate Roof Installation

Installing a slate roof requires a roofing crew like Skyward Roofing who is familiar with slate roofs and their unique properties. Slate tiles are extremely weather resistant, but can crack if they are mishandled or walked on. Slate roofs are also heavy, and require a strong and sturdy roof deck underneath. One other thing to consider with slate is how long it will last. Slate often outlasts other roofing elements like the underlayment, flashing, or plywood roof decks. For this reason, different materials are chosen for these elements so they will have a comparable lifespan, or at least not need to be replaced as often.

Slate Roof Repair

Slate tiles are long-lasting and hard-wearing, but eventually all roofs need some TLC and slate is no different. Some slate roofs in New York City have been around for over a hundred years already. To work on or repair a slate roof, scaffolding needs to be set up so workers don't walk on the slate tile. Slate is not only slick, but also brittle when it comes to weight loads because it is not a flexible material. Our roofing crews have years of experience working on and repairing slate roofs throughout Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Queens, and Yonkers. We take respectful care of historical homes, and treat every house like our own. If you need slate tiles replaced, flashing repaired, or gutters for your slate roof, we can help!

Unique Considerations for Slate Tile Roofs

Installing a Slate Roof Skyward Roofing Bronx, NY
Installing a Slate Roof
  • Slates that are walked on may break apart immediately or suffer an invisible fracture that cracks 5 to 10 years later - giving rise to a roof that does not shed water.
  • The roof decking needs to last as long as the slate - roughly 150 years or more. Plywood, laminated woods, particle boards, and materials that rely on glue for structural integrity are sub-standard roof decking materials for slate roofs and should not be used as they will decay many years before the slate will.
  • The roof must be structured or reinforced to handle the heavy weight (800 to 1,500 lbs. per 100 sq. feet) or there is a risk of roof collapse.
  • One way slate tiles are inspected is by sound. Quality slate tiles have a ring to them, whereas lower quality tiles have a dull sound. Experienced slate roofers can know what sound they are looking for when they tap the tile.
