Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF) Roofing

Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF) Roofing
in New York City

Improve Your Roof with an SPF Treatment

Commercial property owners have always sought out affordable, durable and long-lasting roofing systems that are also low maintenance with a high insulation factor, which are exactly the benefits that spray foam roofing provides. SPF Roofing systems have been used for about 40 years which is enough time to educate the industry how to best install and maintain them. However, one problem property owners have is finding contractors in New York with experience repairing and installing spray foam roofing. Skyward Roofing has 35 years of roofing experience and has installed and maintained many SPF roofs. You can feel confident hiring us for your spray foam roofing needs.
Spray foam roofing is somewhat similar to a roof coating. It adds insulation to your roof while providing a barrier against water. Spray foam roofing is made of polyurethane foam. The final top coat can be made of silicone, urethane, polyurethane or acrylic. The mixture goes on wet but quickly dries, creating a waterproof surface.

A SPF roof is a 3-layer system:
  • The bottom layer is the polyurethane foam
  • A base topcoat is added in the middle
  • The top layer is a coating of elastomeric silicone or acrylic coating

Together, these layers make a monolithic, waterproof barrier with excellent insulation and UV resistance. The top coating can also be embedded with granules to improve traction and strengthen the surface against damage from various sources.

Benefits of an SPF Roof

SPF roofs are described as "self-flashing". This means they don’t require separate flashing material around penetrations, such as chimneys and vents, and is sprayed directly around them. This reduces the likelihood of leaks from some of the most common locations. The foam is also valued for its ability to expand and contract with the building as it heats and cools, reducing the possibility of stress fractures.

This fire-resistant roofing option prevents any damage you may have (such as splits or cracks), from getting worse and serves as a waterproof seal for your roof. This is a very popular choice for businesses looking for a roof that will improve insulation, help reduce energy costs, and extend the life of their existing roof.

The SPF Roof is a closed cell type of foam which stops any water from traveling from point of origin throughout the system. This means that if water is able to get into one spot, through a small crack or hole, the water stays localized.

Spray Foam Roofing is a renewable roof, meaning that when the initial warranty runs out, a new layer of SPF can be laid down and a new warranty issued. This makes it a very cost-effective roofing system.

SPF Roof Installation

SPF roofing systems can be applied over many types of flat roofs, including metal, TPO, EPDM and BUR roofs. Since SPF adds little weight to existing roofs, it can be used to recover a roofing system without a tear off the old one. However, the existing roof must be prepared to ensure a good adherence. This usually means removing the ballast, or adding fasteners when needed.

To produce spray foam, a special sprayer combines two liquids as it is sprayed onto the existing roof substrate. This combination produces an expanding foam that will fill in and seal gaps, seams, and cracks in the substrate. The operator will continue to spray in an overlapping pattern until a consistent layer of foam covers the entire roof. Because the application requires a machine to pump the material to the roof, this roof system is more easily installed on buildings that do not have a lot of stories.

Proper training and experience is needed in the application process. The training is important, because as they start out, beginners quite often leave ridges and valleys in the foam during application. Skyward Roofing SPF application operators have to pass several performance tests and show they apply the foam with skill and consistency before they are allowed to work on client's roofs.
