How Rockefeller Center Changed New York City

New York City has long been known for its diverse and iconic landmarks, many of which attract millions of tourists each year. One of the most famous and beloved of these landmarks, the Rockefeller Center, has been a symbol of the Big Apple since its opening in the 1930s. Completed in 1933, the Rockefeller Center was the first major project to be undertaken by the Rockefeller family in New York City, and it was an audacious undertaking. The Rockefellers desired to create a self-contained business and cultural complex that would set itself apart from the rest of the city. The project was the brainchild of John D. Rockefeller Jr., who sought to provide a tremendous and enduring civic center that would be carefully planned and functional. His son, Nelson Rockefeller, championed the plan, and the elder, Mr. Rockefeller, supervised the entire project. Learn more about A Fun Family Experience at Central Park Zoo New York.

The Rockefeller Center project ran into obstacles. The complex was initially planned on an old manufacturing district, zoning worries and financial considerations necessitated changes. Rockefeller prevailed, and demolished several blocks of shops and businesses. The project moved forward, and construction began in 1930.
