Exploring the Greenbelt Park in Staten Island, NY

A Hidden Gem of Staten Island
The Greenbelt is a cherished destination for those seeking a peaceful retreat into nature, offering a wealth of outdoor activities and educational opportunities in the vibrant borough of Staten Island. Previously owned by the Girl Scouts, it was sold and then resold to the city to preserve the cherished camping spot and old growth woodlands in Staten Island.

Nestled in the heart of Staten Island, the Greenbelt stands as a serene oasis amidst the urban landscape. Spanning over 2,800 acres, this natural haven offers a refreshing escape into nature for locals and visitors alike. Managed by the Greenbelt Conservancy, the park, trails, and event center are dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich natural beauty of the area.

Discover the Trails and Wildlife
The Greenbelt is renowned for its extensive network of trails that cater to hikers, bird watchers, and nature enthusiasts. With over 35 miles of trails, visitors can explore diverse habitats, including woodlands, wetlands, and meadows. The center's trails range from easy walks to more challenging hikes, making it accessible for all levels of outdoor enthusiasts. Willowbrook Park is a part of the Greenbelt and also offers family-friendly features for family outings.

Wildlife observation is a highlight at the Greenbelt. The area is home to a variety of species, including white-tailed deer, red foxes, and numerous bird species. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times for spotting wildlife, as these are the times when animals are most active.

Educational and Recreational Activities
The Greenbelt also offers a range of educational and recreational programs for all ages. The Greenbelt Nature Center is the event hub of the park and houses informational exhibits and educational programs. This thoughtfully-designed eco-friendly building is also an event space that can be rented for important dates.

Additionally, audio tours, guided tours, and special events are available throughout the year and are conducted by dedicated volunteers. These programs aim to educate visitors about the local ecosystem and foster a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
From nature scavenger hunts to educational programs for kids, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Visiting Information
The Greenbelt Nature Center is open year-round, with free admission to its trails and grounds. The center is easily accessible by car and public transit, and there is ample parking available. For those interested in learning more about the Greenbelt or planning a visit, more information can be found on the Staten Island Greenbelt's official website.
