The park itself spanned over 850 acres and was designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, who also created the famous grounds of Mount Royal in Montreal, Canada. Belvedere Castle provides visitors with fantastic views of southern Manhattan and beautiful gardens to explore, free for all to enjoy! This castle-like structure is made out of rusticated blocks of Hudson River greystone topped by a roof tiled red with terracotta ridge caps above their sharp green copper gable peaks filled with quatrefoils beneath the round arches of the corner towers. Belvedere Castle was built in 1869 and opened on May 11th, 1870, by Marcus Ward through his Belvedere Real Estate Company as an observation tower for Central Park visitors.
